RS305-1 - A New Approach to Assessing and Measuring Project Complexity
This work summarizes the investigation of project complexity, an attribute that is frequently blamed when a project does not achieve cost, schedule, or functional objectives, yet that is poorly understood and seldom quantified. The summary report shows how the research team devised a method for measuring project complexity, determined how complexity drives project-related decisions, and then developed an Excel-based tool (included in IR305-2) that enables teams to control the drivers of project complexity and to manage and mitigate the risks they pose.
IR305-2 - A Guide to Assessing and Managing Project Complexity
This Implementation Resource explains how CII Research Team 305 applied a structured research process to identify 37 indicators of project complexity, deployed the indicators to differentiate between high- and low-complexity projects, and then built a Project Complexity Assessment and Management (PCAM) Process that helps a team gauge the complexity of its project and develop strategies for managing it. The PCAM Process includes an Excel-based PCAM Tool, which is included with this book.
FR-335 - Improving the U.S. Workforce Development System
This collaborative work by CII, NCCER, CURT, and IMPACT identifies a number of significant challenges to the preparation of craft professionals for the North American construction industry today. The findings propose ways to redesign the U.S. workforce development system to emphasize secondary students' career readiness.
SP335-1 - Restoring the Dignity of Work: Transforming the U.S. Workforce Development System into a World Leader
Working together, CII, NCCER, CURT, and IMPACT researched how to redesign the U.S. workforce development system to emphasize secondary students' career readiness. CII members are encouraged to share these proposals with their representatives in government.
RT-MLS-02 - PDRIx for Manufacturing & Life Sciences
Project Definition Rating Index (PDRIx) for Manufacturing & Life Sciences Projects is a scope definition tool developed specifically by the MLS sector. It is designed to help project teams with both a building and an industrial process inside the facility measure the degree of scope definition, identify gaps, and take appropriate actions to reduce risk during front end planning. PDRIx for MLS is a derivative of PDRI Industrial and PDRI for Buildings that follows the same recommended practices for conducting PDRI assessments, but has been updated to include current project delivery elements. The element list has been updated by this research team to address critical scope definition needs of capital projects.
Overall, an analysis of 42 projects, representing more than $5.06 billion (USD) in total installed cost, shows that PDRIx for MLS provides project teams in the MLS sector with a more effective assessment tool to understand risk and help identify gaps in scope definition.
