Engineering with Artificial Intelligence - AI as a Tool, Teammate, and Coach

Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize safety, sustainability, and quality in engineering and construction. However, it is often unclear how and where to apply AI to maximum engineering, design, and construction activities. Chris McCombs will provide actionable insights on how to identify AI opportunities, prepare data infrastructure to support AI solutions, and understand tradeoffs between different AI modalities in an engineering context.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
 
Has the Federal Reserve successfully engineered a soft landing, or is the confluence of geopolitical conflict, a presidential election, rising consumer debt levels, and still high interest rates conspiring to produce economic downturn in 2024?  It is difficult to know whether 2024 will be a good year, but it is clear it will be a very interesting one. The presentation will supply in-depth analysis of major factors shaping economic outcomes, including interest rates, global conflict, wage dynamics, business confidence, and demographics.  Dr. Basu will then forecast the coming year, highlighting the major risks that economic stakeholders will likely encounter.

RT-402: Advanced Project Controls
 
Drawing on the experience of 200+ experts, the study outlines actionable steps to harness the potential of advanced and real-time project controls. It leverages best practices and corresponding maturity tools, provides directions on sensing and information technologies, prioritizes KPIs benefiting the most from real-time data, and highlights high-value AI applications. Illustrated through case studies, the adoption of the resources enables timely decisions with a 360˚ view of projects while empowering SMEs to devote 80% of their time analyzing information and only 20% manipulating data, which reverses a historical trend. Through thoughtful investment, pioneering organizations realized reduced absenteeism, increased productivity, enhanced predictability, cost reductions, and optimized portfolio management.
 

RT-403: Navigating the Digital Transformation landscape for Capital Projects
 
In the dynamic landscape of capital projects, Digital Transformation has emerged as a cornerstone for success, but its complexity often transcends traditional project management metrics. RT-403 laid critical groundwork for the industry's digital evolution. By synthesizing insights from CII member data, the RT has created an understanding of Digital Transformation as an ongoing metamorphosis. The study created a centralized and searchable dataset to serve as a compass to enable CII members to decipher trends, sidestep pitfalls, and capitalize on the dividends of digital investments to empower organizations.
 

RT-405: Cultivating Success: Supercharging AWP with a Culture Makeover
 
Fostering a culture conducive to project success is crucial to navigating the complexities and ever-evolving landscape of the construction industry. RT-405 identified the cultural and behavioral challenges within capital projects and created a strategic plan to refine and enhance organizational culture and behavior. The study uncovered specific cultural barriers impacting AWP implementation and the RT presentation will unveil a comprehensive analysis of cultural challenges, survey insights, case studies, and potential strategies for cultivating a culture that significantly improves AWP performance and project outcomes.
 

RT-406Rethinking Quality Management with a Culture-Centric Approach
 
RT-406 has identified 20 significant quality management challenges that often afflict capital projects and have found underlying causal factors of those challenges. To overcome the challenges, this presentation explores metrics for proactive management, establish clear ownership structures to effectively address them, and introduce an industry-leading quality culture assessment tool. The tool will allow organizations to assess current quality culture and readiness to ensure the integrity, reliability, and predictability of project execution.
 

Managing Design Integration in Collaborative Project Delivery

In collaborative project delivery approaches like Design-Build, management of the interfaces between design and construction efforts becomes increasingly vital to project success. The research examines the unique and relatively new role of the Design Integration Manager. The Design Integration Manager acts as the liaison between the lead designer, the construction manager, and the owner to ensure that the project vision is realized. Through job analysis workshops, interviews, and surveys, the research team has comprehensively mapped the responsibilities and core competencies needed for the role. The culminating resource, the Design-Builder’s Guide to Design Management, provides structured guidance that can be used in hiring, training, and developing effective Design Integration Managers. The presentation will discuss how the role can be leveraged to facilitate decision-making, to swiftly identify and resolve project issues, and improve the design integration process.

Ben Breen: PMI-CP Certification - Addressing global cost and time overruns

The construction sector is the largest sector in the world, accounting for 13% of global GDP, but it’s been marred with low productivity. A recent survey of PMP holders has shown 70% of construction projects experience cost and time overruns. A similar survey has shown that for every $1 billion spent on construction projects, $127 million is wasted, making construction the most wasteful sector globally.

As the world’s leading project management association with over 50 years in the space, PMI has collaborated with leading construction industry experts and organizations to develop a new certification, PMI-CP, to address some of the issues. The aim of the new certification is to provide construction professionals with the relevant skills to improve efficiency, productivity, and transform the way the industry approaches projects across the globe. The organizations integral to developing the new certification include Lean Construction Institute (LCI), Construction Industry Institute (CII), Saudi Aramco, Jacobs, DPR Construction, Larsen & Toubro, Amey, BHP, and others. 

The topics covered for PMI-CP certification are multidimensional. It includes the unique principles relevant to delivering built environment projects and the latest technologies making inroads into the sector. The certification presents an opportunity for new and experienced professionals to upskill and learn new techniques that can be immediately applied to projects across the world.

Constructing Connections: Standardizing Data Exchange for Digital AWP Execution

The CII’s AWP Data Requirements Joint Working Group, a collaborative effort among owners, EPCs, suppliers, and technology providers, has taken a groundbreaking step forward in industry digital transformation. The team has created a unified data model that integrates CII’s AWP data requirements with IOGP’s CFIHOS, establishing a standard for data exchange and collaboration throughout the EPC cycle and into operations. Join to discover how the emerging standard can revolutionize data exchange, enhance collaboration, and significantly boost the efficiency of project stakeholders with data centric AWP execution.
