The State of AI for Construction Safety

Background

Construction safety is a critical concern, aiming to prevent worker injuries and fatalities on construction projects. While CII members recognize the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize safety in construction, they often lack a comprehensive understanding of the available AI applications in the market. This project seeks to bridge this gap by providing CII members with an overarching view of AI applications for construction safety

Objectives

The project team will include an academic researcher and CII members. The Team will:

1.   Identify key use cases for AI in construction safety:
  • Highlight scenarios where AI can significantly enhance safety practices. These should address specific tasks that can be addressed in part or completely by AI.
2.   Map out the current landscape:
  • Identify available AI tools in the market for construction safety
  • Develop and apply criteria for evaluating AI tools. Establish and use criteria to assess AI tools, considering usability, regulatory compliance, integration efforts, and cost
  • Provide an overview of the current state of AI applications in construction safety and how they relate to identified use cases
3.   Evaluate opportunities and map use cases:
  • Match use cases with existing tools and identify gaps
  • Identify immediate ("low hanging fruit") and long-term ("high hanging fruit") opportunities for AI in construction safety
4.   Provide a forward-looking vision:
  • Offer insights into the future evolution of AI tools including potential benefits and risks
  • Propose a strategic path for future AI tool development to enhance construction safety

Expected Deliverables

1.   Panel discussions or a series of online talks featuring AI experts from the industry to share knowledge and foster dialogue
2.   A list of use cases
3.
A table comparing available tools across different criteria (and utilizing the technology assessment framework defined by RT-382)
4.   A comprehensive white paper detailing the state of AI tools in construction safety and a vision for the impact and risks of using AI for safety
5.   A presentation at a CII event summarizing key findings and insights from the research

Value for CII Members:

1.   Enhanced Safety Measures:
  • Gain insights into opportunities to significantly improve construction safety through advanced AI tools
  • Identify practical, immediate solutions ("low hanging fruit") that can be quickly implemented to enhance safety protocols
  • Recognize areas where additional support and development are needed to fully leverage AI technologies
2.   Optimized Resource Utilization:
  • Gain insights on how to optimize the use of resources by integrating AI tools, leading to more efficient and effective safety management.
3.   Competitive Advantage:
  • Position your organization as a leader in construction safety innovation, attracting clients and partners who prioritize safety and technological advancement.

Additional Notes

The selected academic(s) will work with CII in the identification and selection of a development partner and specific application prior to the project proposal. The development partners should be able to prototype an AI application that is open-source and may be available for CII members at no charge. Failure to identify a partner will hinder the approval of a project proposal. Academics are encouraged to identify potential partners in their submitted qualifications.

Time Frame and Milestones

  • Nominations for RT Industry Members: March-May 2024

  • PIs meet with CII to prepare for developer search and selection: May-June 2024

  • Kickoff: (Target) September 2024

  • Project presentation: February 2025

  • (Possible) Presentation at a CII event: August 2025
