Abstract
This course covers ten specific areas of safety emphasis followed by a summary and conclusions:
- The seriousness of the safety problem in the construction industry will be described through the industry injury statistics and by examining the impacts of both minor and serious injuries.
- The causes of injuries will be examined from various perspectives with insights of how injuries can be prevented.
- The effectiveness of demonstrated management commitment to safety, effective safety staffing of projects and the importance of planning to safety will be described.
- Emphasis will be given to the importance of training and education, the importance of involving worker in the safety process and the need to provide proper recognition for the workers.
- Subcontractor safety management, accident/incident reporting and investigations, and drug/alcohol testing will be described in terms of their impact on safety performance.
- Delivering safe outage or shutdown projects will be examined from the perspective of people resourcing, planning, scheduling and contract formation.
- The role of the facility owner on project performance will be described in terms of contractor selection, contractual requirements, and the active involvement of the owner during the construction process.
- The role of designers will be described to demonstrate the importance of making careful decisions during the design phase to ensure the safety and well being of the construction workforce.
- The upstream or leading indicators of safety performance will be examined in relation to their effectiveness in predicting or determining safety performance that is not possible with lagging indicators.
- The various safety techniques will be examined from an implementation point of view to put knowledge to practice.
